Mutua Madrid Open - Madrid

ClayWTA 1000

A WTA 1000 on outdoor clay in Madrid, after Stuttgart and before Rome. The same thin air at 667 m does the same thing to this draw: the ball sits up and flies, which trims the grip a pure clay grinder relies on. Serves and forehands land heavier, the returner gets less time, and totals run higher than on sea-level clay. Flat power wins here. Best of three.
